Bye bye Xbox, hello shiny new PS3.

Towards the end of the year I made a decision, and that decision was to defect to the Dark Side (Star Wars reference ftw). Yes my friends, I'd had enough of Xbox and wanted a PS3. Hubby (fanboy) was ecstatic but I felt like I had betrayed my Xbox. (yes, dramatics are necessary for such a first world problem).

You see, my love affair with Xbox started quite some time ago (about 10/11 years ago) back with the release of the original Xbox. It was normal at this time to have a PS1 or PS2, and I had both, but they just weren't cutting it and i had to have the Xbox. The Xbox and I bonded quickly and our love became strong.

When the Xbox 360 was announced, I have no shame in admitting that I felt that familiar rumbling of the Nerdgasm and I even managed to convince Hubby, who at that time was a Sony fanboy, that he too wanted an Xbox 360. And so, release day came and we became the proud owners to a new and wonderful machine. Although, time went by and Hubby went back to his Sony fanboy ways and no longer wanted the Xbox.
This is what it first looked like.

I could never have imagined losing that love or having any twitch of a desire to return to a Playstation product ever again.

But alas, that love could not live forever. We grew apart. we wanted different things. I wanted the joy and love we once had and it wanted my money. My Xbox became a(n Xbox Live) Gold digger.

If I'm honest, there was much more to it than the console becoming a money grabbing whore. It had let itself go a bit. It was no longer that bright white colour it had once been and even though I lovingly cleaned it regularly, the light discolouration had set in and turned bits of it an unsightly yellowy colour.
It had also became nagginly noisy and now sounded like a Boeing 747 during take off. I just cant look at it the same way anymore.

The change to the Dark Side has been a difficult one and not just because of that niggling feeling of betrayal.
For one, regardless of what everyone says, the Dark Side DOES NOT have cookies. Disappointed face. :|

I had started out by buying a 12GB Super Slim. This console was gorgeous and looked nothing like a George Foreman grill. Bonus!

Yes it was tiny and at this point I would've said 'Fear not young Padawan, for I have a plan' and I did have a plan. The plan was, to have a few small PSN titles on the console at a time and have one retail game or Larger PSN title at a time. Then when the warranty had expired, I was going to upgrade the hard drive.

This plan quickly failed, because, whilst they say it's a 12GB console, with all the system crap on there, what you actually get is 9GB. 'It'll be fine' I said. 'I can still manage it' I said. How wrong was I?

The complete downfall of the plan finally came along when I purchased Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale from the PSN store. The game was only 5.8GB so it would have been fine, except that I had forgotten that Playstation requires double the file size in free space for it to download. Well, even with an empty console, that 9GB just wouldn't be enough would it?

I stressed out and bitched about it for a while, until I came up with an idea. I called the lovely people at my local Pink Planet and enquired about how much store credit they would give for a 12GB super slim. I then asked what other PS3 consoles they had in stock and what the prices were for them. They had a Slim 160GB and I could get it for just a few quid more than the store credit they would give me. Bargain. So I rushed down there on Sunday morning and completed the transaction. Success.

So, back on track, you'd think that would be the end of it right? Wrong, not quite there yet.

I loaded up the console, loaded my account and selected the store so I could get my games downloaded. But, when I clicked on the store, the console reset itself. WTF? I tried several times and it just kept doing it. It gave the error 'Cannot launch store until system update 4.31 has been installed' Checked the system details, Update 4.1 currently installed. Aaaaargghh.

Turns out that the update that had been installed on there previously was borked and after speaking to the more lovely people at Playstation Europe Customer Services, we got it fixed. Phew. Sorted then. NO. more drama.

First we realised that I had forgotten to deactivate my account on the super slim before trading it in and because my account had also been active on an older console (no longer with us either) at some point, I had used all of my console activations. Dammit. Luckily, Hubby took the initiative to go down to Pink Planet on Monday morning and they let him go through the deactivation on the Super Slim. Saweet. Another breath of relief.

But still not over. Our internet went down on Monday morning and we have had problems with it bombing out ever since. We have a temporary fix which has limited the bomb outs to only a few per day rather than a few hundred, but I spent 2 days and 2 nights trying to get all the downloads done and we can't have both Playstations on at the same time without one of them disconnecting. We're just waiting on Sky fixing t'interwebs now.

I'm glad we got there in the end, I was very close to going back to the Xbox and just saying forget it I made a mistake, but I'm ready now to settle into what will hopefully be a long and fruitful love affair with my PS3. I've still got the Xbox 360 and since I had spent quite a bit of money on the store, I intend to keep it and every now and then I will indulge in a cheeky, bit on the side, something, something, if ya know what I mean? Just don't tell the Playstation.

Game on my friends.
