New Years Eve Subtle Firework Nails

So Yeah, we don't really do anything for New Years Eve, we are really boring in that sense. We don't drink so no point getting drunk, we don't really do parties and we prefer to spend the time how we would like our year to continue, comfortably and spending time with each other, with the possibility of gaming or watching a good movie.

So I wanted my New Years nails to reflect just how subtle my celebrations are. I started with a base of Barry M Black, then I used Bundle Monster stamping plate BM-H14 and stamped using Freckles Polish Caipirinha, Kicking up Leaves and He's Been He's Been! All holo's available from the Freckles Polish Etsy store.

As you can see above, in normal daylight, the stamping is very subtle and in certain lights it actually looks like I am just wearing black nail polish.

If you add artificial light or direct sunlight, if it is available which is unlikely in Britain most of the time, and the holo pops and gives the fireworks. I had trouble actually getting a god photo showing how pretty it really looked.

I did however get a blurry photo showing the holo fireworks perfectly. Don't you think this really looks like fireworks exploding in the air?

What plans do you have for tonight and have you done your nails to match?

How cute is this? I found this on The Nerdy Bird and it is by a very talented artist called Stewart McKenny. So everyone, go forth and Have a Super New Year!

My favourite nails of 2014

Did you all have an awesome Christmas? I got distracted by all the festivities, food and presents and forgot to blog, I also did some pretty nails for Christmas but forgot to take any photos of them before they got ruined, I wore them for 5 days. What goodies did you get? I can't believe the year is nearly over, it seems to have flown by.

When I look back on this year of blogging, I look back fondly, for many reasons of course but when I look at my actual nail art, I can see that not only have I improved but I have spent a good chunk of my time putting what I love on my nails. My nerdisms have fully interacted with my nail art and I love it and I plan on doing more of this kind of nail art in 2015.

I have seen loads of people doing their Top 10 lists and I tried to narrow it down to 10, honest, but 15 was the lowest I could get it.

Zelda Inspired Christmas Nails using Born Pretty Nail Art Pen

I haven't really had that much experience with nail art pens, I first came across them when Barry M released theirs and I have only used theirs since. Born Pretty Store have released their own now and I wanted to try one to see how well it worked and how it compared to what I already owned and used.

I went with the white one because I find the best way to test things like this is to go with either white or black and that gives you a great basis on what the quality will be like for the rest of the range. Plus I could do an accurate comparison to my Barry M white pen.

At 7ml, the Born Pretty Store pen is more than double the size of the 3ml Barry M pen so you definitely get way more for your money and they are almost identical in the way the function.

The Born Pretty Store pen has a much better flow rate than the Barry M pen and so far the Born Pretty one hasn't glooped up unlike the Barry M which did pretty quickly, however the Born Pretty pen polish is a fair bit thinner than the Barry M pen and means you have to go over the design a few more times to get it opaque. I did also find that the Born Pretty pen polish did not crack over wet polish as the Barry M pens are known to do.

Although you aren't able to get super thin and dainty lines with nail art pens like you could with a brush, they are quite good for doing nail art for those who, like me, aren't great with brush work but also, because they dry really quickly, they can be a great way to add some quick nail art to dress up a mani.

That is what I have done today, a 5 min ugly Christmas jumper design inspired by Zelda using only the base polish (the green glitter one from my gift swap with Bewitchery) and the Born Pretty nail art pen.

I find the pens really easy to work with and much easier to grip than nail art pens, and price wise, much better value for money then the Barry M ones. For one Barry M pen it costs £4.99 but the Born Pretty pen costs £3.83. That's £1.16 cheaper for more than double the amount of product. If you buy a full set of 16 colours for £44.79 it works out at £2.79 per pen.

If you are interested in buying 1 or 2 or 16 you can get them here from the Born Pretty Store, and don't forget to use my discount code for CBAQ10 for 10% off your basket total, that would bring the set of 16 down to £40.32.

Have you done any 5 minute Christmas mani's this festive season? Only 5 days left, I'm so excited I could squee.

My Christmas Gift Swap with Bewitchery

You already know I love Christmas. everybody loves presents and I also love choosing presents for other people, what can I say, I'm a giver. So when my awesome blogger friend Naomi from Bewitchery suggested doing a Christmas gift swap with each other, I was more than happy to participate.

We had a budget of £20 and the items we chose could be anything and everything, of course we checked if there was anything the other couldn't or don't use. Straight away I had a few things in mind that I wanted to get for Naomi.

Born Pretty Store Stamper Review

So I did this stamper comparison post almost a year ago now and the Konad came out on top of the 3 that I compared, but even though it was better than the others, it wasn't without it's flaws. It doesn't always pick up the whole design, especially if it is super fine details. Not to mention that I am flawed  in stamping myself because I seem to have a complete incapability to stamp straight, my stamping is always wonky not matter how I line it up. So I am still always on the lookout for other stampers that may be able to take the place of the Konad.

My newest try is this Born Pretty Store rectangular stamper. The stamper feels quite firm when you push your finger onto it straight from the packet and I thought that this might be similar to the one I got from ebay where it would be too firm to pick up the design, but when you use it on the stamping plate and the nail it seems to magically take on a really squishy form. It moulds and bulges into the designs on the stamping plate and moulds completely around the nail when applying the design.

It picked up about 99% of the design as you can see in the photo and when applying the design onto my nail I just had to press down once, I didn't have to wriggle it from side to side or anything like that and the design covered my nail, and that is saying something because I have pretty curved nails.

And the best thing is that I managed to apply the designs pretty much straight because of the shape of the stamper. It's a bit skewiff here and there but compared to some of my stamping this is perfect.

The handle is easy to hold because of it's size and shape and was easy enough for me to get a good grip on when stamping to my nail. I don't use the scrapers that come with any of the stampers because I find that the metal ones scratch the plates.

Here is a close up of the stamped designs. I stamped using Moyou Pro Collection 05 plate and in trying to keep with the current season, I thought these little presents would make for some adorable Christmas themed nail art. From left to right I stamped using polishes Konad Black Stamping Polish, Barry M silver Foil and MeMeMe Cosmetics Elegant.

Polishes used for bases colours were from the Barry M Glitterati collection in Catwalk Queen, Fashion Icon and Rockstar. I used OPI cream in my Coffee for my thumb and pinkie.

I am super impressed with this stamper, it just beats out the Konad stamper as my favourite because of the ability to stamp straight with it and I really recommend trying it for anyone who has the same problem.

You can buy this stamper from Born Pretty here for £2.38
Don't forget to use my code CBAQ10 at checkout to get 10% off your full order amount.

Have you got all your presents bought and wrapped for Christmas yet? Only 10 days to go!

The stamper and scraper set in this post were sent to me for review purposes. All opinions given are my own, honest opinion.

Born Pretty Store Gold Snowflakes Christmas Mani

How adorable are these little snowflake nail art decorations from Born Pretty Store? These are the same material as glequins/nail glitter, I think, but they have some lovely intricate details and because of that they are quite fragile and bendy. The upsides to that is that if they bend over, you can see that the top left one has, you can straighten them back out and it will still be in tact and also, it means that if you have quite curved nails, you can 'mould' them to fit your nails.

One side is a gold colour and the other side is bronze. I went with the gold side to do a pretty red and gold Christmassy mani.

Feel sorry for my nubbins :( I had a really bad break on my pointer finger and a not so severe break on my middle finger, so they all had to be taken down really short. The pointer finger is still recovering but we are getting there.

I found them really easy to work with although it did take about 3 coats of Seche Vite for the snowflakes to be smooth without any snaggy bits sticking up (namely the ends/corners of the snowflakes). The fact that they are thin and dainty meant that I could easily cut them to have half a snowflake here and half a snowflake there.

I tried 2 different techniques of applying these, the first was placing the snowflake onto the nail dry and bending it to form the curve of the nail, then removing it, adding topcoat to the nail and placing the snowflake back on. The problems I found with this technique was that during the end application that the would flatten out slightly meaning that some of the end bits were raised off the nail which meant I had to try pushing them down gently while the topcoat was drying. As you can see on the thumb, this led to some ruffles in the polish around the snowflake.

The second technique I tried was leaving the snowflake flat, applying the topcoat and placing the flat snowflake on top. Once the topcoat was completely dry, I then pushed the ends of the snowflake down to get it to fit the nail and finished with a few coats of Seche Vite. This was the best technique .

For the rest of the mani I used Models Own Luminous Red Metallic and Barry M Gold Glitter.
For the snowflake on my pinkie I added some of the Models Own Luminous Red Metallic to one of the snowflakes and allowed it to dry before cutting in half and adding to the nail.
For the V-Shapes on the other 2 nails I used She Sells Seashells single chevron vinyl stencils.

You can buy these Snowflake embellishments here for £1.13 ($1.78). Don't forget to use my code CBAQ10 at checkout for 10% off your basket amount.

You can grab some super bargains at the moment because Born Pretty have a massive Xmas sale going on until the 17th December where you can get up to 80% of selected items. You can go to the nail sale section by clicking here!

What Christmassy nail art have you been wearing or are planning to do?
Are you all ready for the holidays to start?

Loot Crate: Battle

I'm a fair bit late posting the Loot Crate this month because it was quite late arriving with us, it was so late I started to panic that it wasn't going to arrive with us at all. It's been really difficult to avoid all of the Loot Crate spoilers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, especially for the last week but I got through it in completely unscathed.

The theme this month is Battle. There are many different battle types throughout the nerdverse but the crate seems to have a rather large focus on Street Fighter and Megaman. The cover of the magazine is an awesome Battle Arcade Machine, awesome art as usual, I really wish that they would do the covers or variants of the cover art as little pullout posters in the middle of the magazine, wouldn't that be awesome?

First up, I'm going to show you my personal favourite item this month:

Mr Nutcase Custom Phone Cases

*Picture Heavy Post*

When I saw the opportunity to test out a Mr Nutcase phone case I jumped at the chance. I love having loads of different phone cases, I'm kind of like one for every mood, one for every outfit, kind of person and I think having cases that you design yourself is a fab idea. You can put personalised designs on pretty much everything now so why not your phone case and they make great gifts too.

KBShimmer Snow Way!

KBShimmer Snow Way! Macro
I have never had as much trouble getting true colour on photos than I have with KBShimmer Snow Way! I'm not sure why it was but the whole image was either too grey or the polish colour would be perfect but my skin would be bright red. So I apologise for the lobster skin, it was the best I could do to show this beautiful polish.

KBShimmer Snow Way! with no topcoat
This is the second polish from my initial 4 bottle purchase of the KBShimmer Winter 2014 collection (there are another 4 on their way). Snow Way! is a pale, sky blue crelly packed with multi sized matte white glitters. It also has a subtle holographic shimmer. The polish gives the look of snow falling against a blue sky.

It was opaque in 2 coats and the dry time was fairly quick. The above photo shows 2 coats with no topcoat.

KBShimmer Snow Way! with one coat of Seche Vite and some nail art
Of course, I had to add some wintery nail art again, so this time I added some fir trees by sponging on Barry M Gelly Watermelon and a Snow Man Using Barry M Matt White, the scarf is done using Rimmel Luna Love Space Dust.

The polish was smooth with just one coat of Seche Vite.

KBShimmer Snow Way! with one coat of Seche Vite and one coat of OPI Matte Topcoat
Glitter packed crelly polishes always look awesome matte so I had to try it and like KBShimmer Totally Tubular I definitely prefer this polish with no topcoat at all but it does look pretty awesome matte.

Bought from Harlow and Co for $9 CAD a bottle (not including postage to the UK).

Have you bought any of the KBShimmer Winter Collection yet?

Nerd Block Classic November 2014

We have been getting the Nerd Block Classic for the Boy for a few months now and you may have noticed the lack of posts about the Nerd Blocks, this has been because even though the Boy has been ecstatic about them, as parents and grown ups, we haven't really been that impressed, In fact, up until last month we were seriously considering cancelling it or swapping to another subscription.

But last month something changed and the products in the box seemed to be of not only higher quality but also higher value. It was almost like before last month Nerd Block weren't really putting too much thought into curating the products but decided it was time. There were some great items in the Block last month and I even pinched one for myself (the Arkham Asylum Patient Notes Post It block).

This months box has been even better and although at time of writing the post the Boy still hasn't seen it, I know he will love every item, and by every item, I mean possibly minus the watch which I may pinch again, don't judge me, I'm only human and my weakness is awesome nerdy items.

Bundle Monster CYO 2014 Plate Set

Yay! This is the 2nd Create Your Own Bundle Monster Stamping Plate Collection, phew, try saying that 10 times really fast when you are drunk. So just in case you not aware, the Bundle Monster create your own sets are made up of designs submitted by fans, it's quite a long process, the submissions started back in March and they whittled it down and created them and they released about 2 weeks ago.

Just like last year, I submitted a few designs, you might as well have a go and for each design that is used in the finished collection, you get one free plate set. This year (technically) 4 of my designs were used.

So I'm going to show you each plate, then which were my designs, see if you can guess on the way through and then I'll show you my favourite designs, then a mani that I have done using the plates. It's picture heavy so be warned.

KBShimmer White Here, White Now

1 coat of KBShimmer White Here, White Now

KBShimmer recently released their Winter 2014 Collection and all the polishes are freakin' gorgeous, I want all of them but to be on the safe side I only bought 4 (Royal Mail only allow a maximum of 4 polishes in one package), well, 4 for now that is.

I'm doing individual posts on them because they are so lush, I have to wear them for a few days at a time at least.

So this one is White Here, White Now and gah is it beautiful. If I could have only bought one polish from the collection, it would have been this one and I knew it straight away when I saw the swatches.

White Here, White Now is a snowy white textured polish. Although I would say this isn't a classic textured polish as the base is a crelly style and the textured effect is given by the multi sized matte white glitters.

Application is great, but you do have to be precise or not too messy around the cuticles as clean up can be a bit of a bitch because of the glitters, so it is best to save yourself some time here.

With one coat (as in photo above) the polish is beautiful and dainty and although it looks a little patchy in places, it kind of works and so you could get away with just the one coat.

With 2 coats the polish is perfectly opaque and really does look like snow. It can also be great for doing a small blanket of snow on the open end of your nail for some winter wonderland nail art.
The trees were from Bundle Monster BM-407 and stamped using Konad Black onto bare nails, then topped with Barry M Diamond Glitter, that was then topped with one coat of OPI Don't Touch My Tutu and finally, I added KBShimmer White Here, White Now at the end.

I honestly expected the removal of this polish to be difficult (tested on the middle 2 nails to add the nail art) but removal difficulty level was somewhere in between normal polish and textured polish.

I am going to wear this polish so much this Winter, it is undoubtedly my favourite textured polish ever, in fact, it is very close to being my favourite polish ever, I have the winter wonderland style nail art on at the moment and I don't ever want to take it off, everytime I think about removing it I get sad.

I'm gushing here aren't I but look at it! I have seen loads of people saying they have had snow already and I'm proper jealous, I love snow and we probably wont get any here again this year, it would be awesome if we did.

What do you think about this polish? Even if you don't like textured polishes, would you wear this polish during the Holiday season?

Halo MCC Nails

Pretty much exactly 2 years ago I did some Halo 4 nails when Halo 4 came out and with the release of Halo Master Chief Collection yesterday, I decided to take the opportunity to kind of re-do my Halo nails and see how much of an improvement I had made in these last 2 years.

I'll be honest, even when I was about half way through this mani, I was stressing at myself because I didn't feel there was any improvement, but I think I was being too hard on myself and I really, really like this version of my Halo nails.

'Halo: The Master Chief Collection delivers the entire story of the Master Chief for the first time on one console. Play all four games at Xbox One visual fidelity and 60 fps, including a fully remastered Halo 2: Anniversary. Featuring campaigns and multiplayer maps from Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 Halo 2 Vista, Halo 3 and Halo 4, plus access to the live-action digital series Halo: Nightfall and the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer Beta'

Chances are, if you are a gamer, then you have played at least one Halo game, for me, the favourite was Halo 2 on the original Xbox. The man specifically purchased an Xbox One for the release of Halo MCC but because we haven't managed to get a second controller yet, I am yet to play it, but hopefully I will soon.

What is your favourite Halo game and have you had any play time on Halo MCC yet?

I said it last time and I'm going to say it again- 'Spartans don't die, they just go Missing in Action'!

My Mani for Movember

This is the first ever Movember mani I have done.

Movember was started in 2003 in Australia and as of last year, 21 countries took part officially. They have raised £346 million since 2003 but the awareness they have raised about men's health has been even more phenomenal.

Even more people take part every year and like Breast Cancer awareness month (October) it is doing wonders for getting awareness out there and raising money for research in several different areas of men's health including testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health.

Items used for this mani:
Moustache nail wraps from Born Pretty
Barry M Matt White
Barry M Glitterati Rockstar
Konad Black Stamping Polish
One red round glequin from Born Pretty

I got to use my Moustache Monocle design from the Bundle Monster CYO collection, I also used the I from the 'I <3 Geeks' design to kind of make it into an I <3 Moustaches nail,

If you want to get involved in raising awareness but can't grow a moustache, find creative ways to get one, for example, printable moustaches, jewellery in the shape of a moustache, moustache mugs, cat-staches or simply just hold your (or someone else's if that is what you're into) hair across your top lip, then take a selfie and post to social media with the #misstache.

You can also donate here through Movember or here through cancer research.

Have you done a mani for Movember?

Magazine Freebie: Nails Inc Polishes from Glamour Magazine

You may have already seen this but it's too good of a deal not to share, so just in case, Glamour Magazine are giving away a free Nails Inc polish with every copy. There are 4 colours available, the 3 shown in the picture are Marylebone Mews-a pink/grey nude, Hanover Square- a vampy wine red and Wigmore Street- a deep plum purple. The 4th shade is a classic red called Tate.

The polishes are full sized at 10ml and retail for £11 each so are definitely worth the £2 you pay for the magazine. I bought 3 copies, amounting to £6 to get the 3 polishes shown in the picture.

There is also a 20% of H&M gift card (minimum spend of £20) so will be a great help for Christmas shopping.

To top the freebies off, inside the magazine there should be a Body Shop gift card that could be worth £3, £15, £100 or even £1000, I say should because in all 3 of my copies the card was absent and I have seen online that other people have had the same issue, but this is a great voucher if you get it.

Overall a fantastic lot of freebies and worth the £2 spend, in shops now.

Happy Halloween! Terrifyingly Cute Zombies

Happy Halloween!

Aside form actually managing to do some Halloween nails this year, we have pretty much failed at Halloween 2014. We haven't done any decorations, which makes me sad, and we stupidly left getting pumpkins until this morning, and everywhere in our town is sold out, I'm so gutted, so no pumpkin carving for us.

So these are my cute zombie type patchwork nails. I love green nail polish but it gets everywhere, is a pain in the ass to clean up without getting a yellowy green tinge on cuticles and stains my nails no matter how hard I try to prevent it,

This green is a Barry M Superdrug Limited Edition from last year, the red is Ciate Red Hot Chilli, The pink for the brains is Barry M Gelly Dragon Fruit and I used Barry M Black Nail Art Pen for the stitch details.

I also tried it with a coat of OPI Matte topcoat and it looked pretty awesome too.

I had a few more mani's planned out and I might still do them but the temptation is there to start planning out my Christmas mani's straight away, some of the towns and cities around here have already started putting up their Christmas decorations.

Back to Halloween though, what are you wearing on your nails and are you dressing up tonight?
